Welcome to Day 1 of Eagle Vision Inspection Services' 5 Days of Fall!

Over the next five days, we'll share practical maintenance tips designed to help homeowners prepare their homes for fall—and ultimately for the colder months ahead.

Our goal isn't to give you an overwhelming list of weekend projects. Instead, we're going to take your home one area at a time, explain what deserves your attention, and help you understand why it matters.

And today, we're starting at the very top.

🍁 Fall Maintenance Starts With Water

When we picture fall, we usually think of cooler temperatures, changing leaves, football, and maybe that first morning when you finally don't need the air conditioner running nonstop.

But for your home, fall brings something else:

Leaves. Debris. Rain. Wind. And changing weather conditions.

That's why one of the most important things you can do before fall gets into full swing is make sure your home's first line of defense against water is ready.

That means looking at three areas that work together:

The Roof. The Gutters. The Drainage.

Because getting water off your roof is only half the job.

You also have to get it away from your house.

🏠 1. Start With the Roof

Your roof works 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Summer may have brought intense heat, heavy rain, thunderstorms, high winds, and falling limbs. Before adding fall leaves and cooler weather to the mix, take a look at how your roof came through the summer.

From the safety of the ground, look for visible signs such as:

• Missing, damaged, or displaced shingles

• Areas that appear different from the surrounding roof

• Damaged or deteriorated flashing

• Debris collecting in roof valleys

• Tree limbs touching or hanging over the roof

• Sagging or damaged gutters

• Visible deterioration around roof penetrations

And remember—you don't need to climb onto the roof yourself.

If something looks questionable from the ground, that's the time to have a qualified professional take a closer look.

Why does it matter?

Because a roof leak doesn't always begin with water dripping from the ceiling.

Moisture can enter the attic and affect roof decking, framing, insulation, and other materials long before you ever notice a stain inside your home.

Your roof doesn't have to be leaking into your living room to be telling you something is wrong.

🍂 2. Get Ahead of the Gutters

Soon those beautiful fall leaves will start coming down.

Unfortunately, quite a few of them will end up exactly where we don't want them:

In the gutters.

Gutters and downspouts are relatively simple components, but they perform one of the most important jobs around your home—collecting roof runoff and directing it away from the structure.

When gutters become clogged, water can overflow or back up where it doesn't belong.

That can contribute to:

• Deteriorated fascia and soffit materials

• Water spilling beside the foundation

• Landscape erosion

• Crawlspace or basement moisture

• Staining on exterior surfaces

• Premature deterioration of building materials

Cleaning gutters before heavy leaf fall gives you a good starting point.

Then keep an eye on them throughout the season, especially if your home is surrounded by mature trees.

And don't forget the downspouts.

A perfectly clean gutter doesn't help much if the downspout is clogged or dumping all that water directly beside the foundation.

💧 3. Follow the Water

Here's a simple principle every homeowner should remember:

Water should move down, out, and away.

• Down the roof.

• Out through the gutters and downspouts.

• Away from the foundation.

Once water reaches the ground, take a look at where it goes.

• Does the ground slope away from your house?

• Are there low areas where water collects?

• Have summer storms caused erosion?

• Are downspouts discharging right beside the foundation?

• Has mulch or landscaping changed the grade around the house?

Sometimes the most important drainage problem isn't on the roof at all.

It's what happens after the water reaches the ground.

🌳 4. Look Up at the Trees Too

Fall is also a good time to look at the trees surrounding your home.

Branches that grew throughout spring and summer may now be:

• Touching the roof

• Rubbing against shingles

• Hanging over gutters

• Resting against siding

• Positioned where they could cause damage during a storm

Trees are a wonderful part of a property, but vegetation shouldn't be allowed to damage the home.

Trim vegetation where appropriate, and if larger limbs are involved, consider calling a qualified tree professional rather than tackling hazardous work yourself.

🔎 5. Don't Forget the Evidence

Sometimes your home tells you where water has been even when it isn't raining.

Look for clues such as:

• Water stains beneath gutters

• Soil erosion

• Splash marks near the foundation

• Green staining or biological growth

• Peeling paint

• Soft or deteriorated wood

• Moisture staining in the attic

• Damp areas in a crawlspace or basement

Those clues can help tell the story of what happens during a storm.

Follow the clue—not just the symptom.

Why It Matters

Roofing, gutters, downspouts, grading, and drainage may seem like separate parts of your

home.

They're not.

They're one water-management system.

• Your roof sheds the water.

• Your gutters collect it.

• Your downspouts move it toward the ground.

• And your grading carries it away from the structure.

If one part of that chain isn't doing its job, the next part may not be able to compensate.

That's why fall maintenance isn't simply about cleaning leaves out of gutters.

It's about making sure water has a clear path from the sky to a safe location away from your home.

🦅 Eagle Eye Tip

Don't just clean the gutter—follow the water.

The next time it rains, and only when it's safe to do so, take a look outside.

• Watch where the water travels.

• Are the gutters overflowing?

• Are the downspouts flowing?

• Is water pooling beside the house?

• Is it washing away soil?

Sometimes one rainy afternoon can teach you more about your home's drainage than looking at a dry gutter ever could.

Remember: Down. Out. Away.

That's where you want the water to go.

🍂 Tomorrow: Day 2

Today we started at the top and followed water all the way to the ground.

Tomorrow, we're moving to the outside walls of the home.

Day 2 — Seal the Envelope: Windows, Doors & Exterior

Keep the Weather Outside Where It Belongs.

We'll talk about caulking, weatherstripping, siding, trim, exterior penetrations, peeling paint, soft wood, and those tiny openings that can allow moisture and drafts into your home.

Because once we've managed the water...

our next job is keeping the weather outside.

Final Thoughts

Fall maintenance doesn't have to happen all at once.

That's exactly why we're spending five days doing this together.

Today, take a few minutes and simply look up, look around, and follow the water.

Tomorrow we'll take the next step.
